Regardless of whether you own a boat or not, you can still enjoy wakeboarding. There are plenty of cable parks in Missouri that you can head to for learning the ropes of this adventure sport. As a beginner, you’ll love being at a cable park with like-minded people around you, providing you with the perfect atmosphere to get started.

The Basics

When you’re wakeboarding at a cable park, there is a cable to tow you rather than a boat. This arrangement is ideal for beginners as well as experienced wakeboarders who want to improve their skills. It is a cheaper, easier option and environmentally friendly, too.

Typically, there are two types of cable systems. Which one you’ll choose will depend on your ability and comfort.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll want to visit a cable park with a 2-tower or 2.0 cable system. In this system, a straight line is used for towing a single rider. The driver managing the cable can increase or decrease the speed to let you maintain your posture, take turns, and understand the nuances of the sport.

For experienced wakeboarders, there are full-size cables that can tow 8 - 12 people at a time. You can enjoy a constant speed while pulling off tricks around the many obstacles arranged on the sides.

A cable pulls you at a 35–45-degree angle, and you’ll want to identify your natural posture before you enter the water. While wakeboarding at a cable park, remember to keep your arms straight and push your hips upward and forward to maintain overall control.

The Starting Dock

Once you have put on the right gear, you’re ready to slide into the water. You can choose to do a sitting start or a standing start depending on your skills.

If you do a sitting start, you’ll gradually move to a standing position while leaning backward and riding as if a boat is towing you. If you prefer a standing start, you’ll need to stand on the board with your weight shifted forward. Once you’ve moved from the dock to the water, you’ll want to transition your weight back to maintaining your preferred riding posture.

Following the Cable

Being towed by a cable is different from being towed behind a boat. Here, the cable's elevated position can make you feel that it's pulling you upwards, which can make you unsteady. To avoid this, square your hips, stabilize the rope at your chest level, and keep your shoulders straight.

Hitting the Ramps and Sliders

A cable park allows you to try different wakeboarding tricks and have fun. However, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the basics first, and then try out the tricks.

As a beginner, practice in the section designated for novices and let your cable operator know if you aren’t comfortable at a particular speed. It’s better to start smaller, maintain your balance, and perfect your posture at the starting dock before taking advanced steps.
